Kodi support for Quadraphonic titles (Quad 4.0)

I have done some searching and I just can't seem to find the answer to this anywhere, which is surprising, but hopefully, somebody could answer this question please?

I have been using Kodi/XBMC for many years, and have the following setup:

1. x86 PC running Linux with XBMC/Kodi on top (dedicated PC for this task, built by me).
2. NVidia GT480 or something like that connected to HD (and 4k) capable Yamaha Pre-Pro/AVR CXA5100 via HDMI
3. Kodi set to 7.1 output and passthrough and support for everything ticked for the output to AVR
4. AVR (actually Pre-Pro CXA5100) set to out 5.1 output (to match the number of speakers I have) - anything in "surround left/right" and "back left/right" plays correctly in my rear speakers (I also have a test track which proves this)
5. Any (Kodi) supported container file with any support codec inside the container, when in either 2.0, 5.1 or 7.1 plays correctly on my system.
6. I also have a Cambridge 751BD Bluray player connected via HDMI to the same AVR with the same passthrough bitstream setting (to make the AVR do all the decoding work).

I have a small number of (Pink Floyd) LPCM hi-res 4.0 (Quadraphonic/Quad) titles which play back perfectly in Quad/4.0 via my Bluray player as per point 6.
These same titles, ripped to file, play back either as 2.0 or mixed up 5.1 via Kodi.

I thought at this point I should double check that there is no reason why Kodi should not play correctly the Quad/4.0 LPCM streams?  i.e Kodi does indeed support LPCM 4.0?

Just for clarity, I usually rip these kinds of titles of the disc (both 2.0 and 5.1) via MakeMKV -> strip video to new mkv -> convert mkv to WAV, convert WAV to FLAC (add tags and artwork) - always keeping the enclosed LPCM bitsteam inside the container untouched (I want it to remain bit-perfect).  The same ripping process for Quad/4.0 takes place but on playback of these titles, causes the above problem.

If I play the mkv that comes straight out of MakeMKV, I get mixed up 5.1, same for converting that to WAV.  If I convert the WAV to FLAC, I *then* get 2.0 (stereo) instead.

I have done a lot of reading about there being no actual "standard" for channel ordering, but ffmpeg decodes the files as either quad(side) (if it's in a MKV or WAV container) or plan "quad", if it's in a FLAC container.  The channel order in the kodi.log looks correct at playback time.

I am running out of ideas.  I could possibly fix it by adding a silent centre channel track, to make it 5.0 (or even that plus silent sub/.1 to make it 5.1), but I'd rather just be able to play any 4.0 that I have without modification if at all possible.

Anyone able to help/have any ideas? (especially if Kodi definately does support 4.0 playback (I am presuming that it does!))

Cheers,

Matt.

Android - Kodi 17.6 unable to create new database and generates zero size DB file.

Hi,
I installed Kodi 17.6 on my android tv and it worked fine for a while. Due to a problem, I cleared the cache and data but after that, I couldn't install any official addons such as soudcloud, art.tv, and youtube.
After of googling and logging, I found the problem comes from DB. The Kodi cannot create a new database for addons27.db and the rest. I tried to delete them manually but it still doesn't work and always creates zero size db for all Addons27.db, ASP0.db, Epg11.db and ....
You can find the LOG FILE here.

Movie scraper not working

Hi, every time when I add new movies, the universal movie scraper does not recognize them and I have to manually add them to my movie library by using the 'scan item to library' option for each individual movie. I've gone through all the existing threads on this, but I cannot figure it out.

Connecting at hotel

HI all,

Newbie in need assistance in going online w/ Kodi while staying at hotel. I am currently residing in a hotel where having difficulties with Kodi. Kodi will recognize hotel wifi and either auto-connect but not ask for the password when setting up or ask me for the password when trying to choose wifi after setting up. Obviously, as a guest in the hotel, they are not going to give me the password, with that being said how can I bypass hotel wifi to set up Kodi while having Kodi recognize wifi and connect to it? Apparently using a wifi router as an access point or repeater seem to be a solution as noted at this forum link Kodi wi-fi issue, however, I am not sure of the process. Can someone be kind enough to provide a step-by-step guide to 1) direct router to act as an AP or repeater 2) walk me through the process of getting Kodi to recognize the router AP (or repeater) as hotel wifi. I can access hotel wifi on my phone and computer, with sometimes a step in between auto-connecting such as re-entering my email and name, but Kodi is asking for more than that. I managed to successfully download Kodi onto A95X pro using my phone as wi-fi hotspot, and want to use hotel wifi. PLEASE HELP!!

Thank you in advance.

What's the deal with Tags?

Tags are great. They can be scraped by various scrapers to provide additional information for media allowing for specific searches, lists or even skin interactions. They can be set by the user through various media manager methods. They can be generalized, customized and bejeweled! (OK not bejeweled).

But then the can also be useless. Various points within Kodi fail to read/recognize tags. They can't be used for skinning variables. They scrape into the library in random order rather than the order from the source.

Tags have helped me solve a number of ideas within my own personal custom Kodi skin build. I use them for playlists, for icons, or visibles, for lots of things. Bbut then they fail in other ways that, should they work, would be super amazing. I don't understand how they work, why they work here but not there and how Kodi seems to treat them in an erratic fashion rather than an organized method.

Are Tags somewhat of a forgotten step-child within Kodi? Are there not enough users who've tried to exploit the benefits of Tags so that further development on them happens?

An easy example I can think of is the method of denoting a media type source. From the official Kodi wiki if you'd like your ripped Blu-ray media to display a Blu-ray icon you must do so by using a file naming convention. This will ensure the method, through a variable, will work on all appropriate screens. But why can't we do the same thing with a Tag in the metadata and not have to name files and folders with various additional "tags"?

If I was a better programmer maybe I could understand better but that is not my vocation so I'm posting my thoughts here in hopes those with far better knowledge than I can shed some light on these mysteries for me.

I compile Kodi 18.0 Beta3 in a raspberry pi 3, everything seems ok except when I try to play a video; the video start but the videoplayer options doesnt work, in order to debugg the error I switch to debugg mode (ctr + shif + d ) and start the video but in this case everything is ok (the video plays and the options works).

RFC: Tweak to PVR Timers/Timer Rules context menu

$

I have a small PR I'd like to put in regarding the context menus in the PVR Timers and Timer Rules areas, I thought I'd ask the community if this would be a good way to go or not.  The small problem is that the context menu in Timers can be inconsistent with that in Timer Rules.  Right-clicking on a Timer with a parent Timer Rule will always show "Edit Timer Rule", even if the Timer Rule is read-only (and also "Delete Timer Rule", for what it's worth).  When the Timer Rule is right-clicked via Timer Rules, the "Edit" option will not be available if it is read-only.

The simplest solution for consistency would be to filter out "Edit Timer Rule" if the parent is read-only and match what Timer Rules does, but "Edit Timer Rule" against a read-only parent accesses a highly convenient read-only display of the rule.  I personally like this very much.

So what I'm thinking of submitting is a set of small changes to adapt "Edit Timer Rule" (Timers) and "Edit" (Timer Rules) to instead be "View" if the timer rule is read-only, so there will always be either "Edit" or "View" in the context menus.  At the same time also remove the "Delete Timer Rule" from the context menu in Timers if the parent happens to not be deletable.  I think there some additional consequences regarding delete to consider with the Timers menus, there is that pop-up that asks to delete just the timer or the timer rule, I honestly haven't looked at that yet.  I've barely looked at what I am proposing for what it's worth -- for all I know there already is a "View" in there Smile

Anyway, if you folks think this is worth adjusting or not and if the plan sounds reasonable I would appreciate the feedback.

I already had this problem a lot of times, until now mostly with Arctic Zephyr on Raspberry Pi. Now, I also have here a debug-log and a crash-dump, where it happened under Windows.

I accidentaly started a video, pressed stop to make it stop and Kodi crashed. Please advise. This happens quite often for me.

Here: Estuary + Windows 7. Also happens with Arctic Zephyr on Raspbian Stretch.

18.0-BETA3 Git:20180927-e180be1

On my Home window in Confluence, the GAMES button is present. I'm not sure if this is by default or if it is due to me having a second profile for a time that was running with a different skin (Estuary). When I tried to disable this button I found that there is no "Hide - Games" option on the Home Window options.

v17 - Autoplay not working from mediaserver

Hi all
I need some guidance on how to get Autoplay next video.

The setup is as follow:
Small kodi box( android ABOX A1) connected to TV and to the router. Router is acting as MediaServer with a external HDD connected.

Problem:
when playing videos from the MediaServer(UPnP) the "Play next video automatically" does not work and the player will stop at the end of the video and will not pick up next video in the same folder. If I use "Play from here" that works just fine.
KODI is v17 and I've tried alpha v18 as well with the same results.
I have the same behavior on windows with Kodi

However, when I connect the external drive directly to the USB of the KODI box then the "Play next video automatically" works without a problem.

Does anyone know why Kodi cannot pick up next file from media server?
any help is appreciated.
thanks

Restore Server's MySQL Database from Client?

$

I have a script that has served me well when I needed to move files from one location to another. Recently, I started tweaking it and forgot to rename the two variables that make up the `SET [strpath|c22|etc] = REPLACE([strpath|c22|etc], @old_val, @new_val)`. Can you guess what happened about five minutes ago when I ran the script again? Yeah, I'm an idiot. Bye, bye entire database.

Obviously I was a little too flippant (even if MySQL Workbench does catch/prevent most mistakes), and the last backup I created of the database was months and months ago. I've moved so many things around since then, it would be next to useless to try and use it as a restore option.

I am virtually certain that each of the connected clients has a copy of the DB, because after failing to connect to the DB, I've noticed they still show all the same content from before their last shutdown.

I would be importing from LibreELEC-based clients. Can anyone offer me any pointers or should I just start poking around on one of the clients? I imagine that I'll probably have to work with some form of XML-SQL conversion software (i.e. I am pretty sure I won't be lucky enough to find .sql files on the clients, more likely .xml). Trying to keep calm here and not screw up any more than I already have (opened my one Windows client, "just to see", and now that client's DB is surely just as trashed), so any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

I could always wipe the DB and start over, but I'm praying I won't have to do that. Took a tremendous amount of time the last time I had to do that.

When I am viewing a a movie by default it has 'Play', 'Choose Art', and 'Refresh' options only ('Cast' is greyed out). But when I click refresh and have it refresh from Internet, it loads in way more information such as the IMDB ratings, Trailer, Cast, Fanart, and Artwork. Is there a way to force refresh for all movies?

Kodi on HTPC + Onkyo receiver audio settings/config help

$

Hello,

Wasn't 100% sure if I should post this here or some other Windows or audio/video forum but thought I'd give it a shot here. It is related to Kodi anyway, but I don't think it's a Kodi issue.

Anyways, setup is:
  • Kodi v18 b2 - the issue was there in v17 as well
  • Sony  XBR65X850
  • Onkyo TX-SR373 receiver
  • HTPC - Windows 10 - i7-7700k, 16 GB RAM, M.2 SSD, GTX 970

All 3 items are connected via HDMI to the ARC ports (TV & receiver).

The problem I have is every time I turn off the receiver power, the PC forgets the receiver (the receiver disappears from the Windows audio settings), then say you opened Kodi, Kodi then forgets what the audio default is supposed to be, and reverts to whatever else it can be (headphones).

So essentially, I turn off the receiver, then open Kodi, it defaults to my Corsair headphones. So now I have to go back through Kodi audio settings to set both audio output/passthrough devices again. It happens to me all the time since I got this new receiver and TV (my old stuff wasn't HDMI, receiver didnt have it, TV didn't have ARC).

I'm not used to the audio device controlling PC settings and not sure how to deal with it. This is also a gaming PC with a second monitor right by the TV, so it's not like I am leaving Kodi open all the time on a PC that isnt used for other things. I'm constantly closing Kodi and turning off stereo so it always resets the settings on me.

I want my headphones as default, and Kodi to remember the audio settings, even if the receiver is off. Is this possible?

I thought about disregarding the ARC functions and switching ports, but I use the Netflix/Twitch apps on the TV so I need ARC for the sound.

I looked through my receiver manual but can't find anything that might help, was hoping for a setting somewhere on the receiver to "remain awake" or something for communication to devices (like a wake on lan thing) so it can stay awake but low power. Or even a master setting in Kodi so that it stays the correct device even if it is not found (config file)?

Thanks in advance!
