Crash when streaming web video through add-ons

I cannot stream video from the web without crashing my Pi.

Video will play fine for a while, then the audio will stop, the video will continue to play for a few more seconds, then XBMC will crash and reboot. Occasionally the video will stall (not showing the buffering window in the top right) then come back, only to crash a minute or two later in the same way.

Normally videos crash at around the same timecode every time they are played.

I have confirmed this happening with the YouTube and Giant Bomb video add-ons.

I did have this issue back in Feburary, then after some random tweaking it went away, and I could watch 2+ hour videos totally fine. Now after applying the new update, everything is back to the way it was.

I get the feeling this has something to do with buffering, as the issue started to appear when the quality of my internet connection dropped recently. It seems like rather than displaying the "Buffering..." dialog in the top right, the Pi just crashes.

I have tried two different builds of XBMC for the Pi (Raspbmc and OpenELEC) both have the same issues.

XBMC version:
  • XBMC (12.2-PRE Git:Unknown), Platform: Linux (Debian GNU/Linux 7.0 (wheezy), 3.6.11 armv6l). Built on Apr 23 2013
  • XBMC 12.2 Release
  • XMBC 13 Nightly (5th May)
  • OpenELEC 3.0.2

The Raspbmc log file is showing a few "WARNING: CRenderManager::FlipPage - timeout waiting for previous frame errors" before the crash.

The OpenELEC log file is showing a few "PrepareNextRender no buffer, out: 0, current: 0, display: 4" errors before the crash.

Things I have tried
  • Adjusting cachemembuffersize
    • Setting to 5242880 - Earlier crash than usual
    • Setting to 0 - Sometimes no effect, sometimes the video will stop very quickly but only return to menu, rather than rebooting
  • Removing overclock - Video ran longer before crashing
  • Swap file - Crash both with or without
  • Replaced Pi - Same Issue
  • Replaced SD card - Same Issue
