XBMC fails to start, ?SDLerror

Tried searching but couldn't find a solution for my problem

Having lots of issues trying to get XBMC to start. I used to have it working on this hardware (Zotac ZBOX SD-ID13, product page @ http://www.zotac.com/products/mini-pcs/z...ons.html), and it's been fine for the past year, but wanted to reinstall and get a fresh setup. So I downloaded XBMCbuntu Intel version and installed it.

After the splash screen, no gui starts up and it goes to the text terminal. If I try to run "xbmc", I get this message:

Can't open display
Running DIL (3.22.0) Version
DtsDeviceOpen: Opening HW in mode 0
DtsDeviceOpen: Create File Failed
ERROR: Unable to create GUI. Exiting
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Crash report available at /home/sareen/xbmc_crashlog-20130216_185102.log



In the crash report, the last line says:

FATAL: XBAppEx: Unable to initialize SDL: Unable to open mouse

Other errors in it are:

ERROR: CXRandR::Query - unable to open xrandr xml
ERROR: CAESinkOSS::EnumerateDevicesEx - Failed to open mixer: /dev/mixer

Has anybody come across this? I couldn't find any google or forum results for the XBAppEx error. I do know that the hardware is capable of running XBMC, should I try and go back to an older version?
