OS: Windows 7 x64 sp1
Audio system: Realtek audio devices: 1 analog headphone (2.0 ch). 1 analog line out (2.0 ch). 1 digital SPDIF coaxial (5.1 ch).
Using Frodo 12 only on local machine. No PVR, No remote.
After upgrading to XBMC Frodo 12 from Eden 11, I suddenly had no audio output at all. After searching the settings I found that the Audio Output Device selected by default in System Settings/System/Audio output was DirectSound:SPDIF digital, even though Audio Output was set to Analog. OK. So I set the Audio output device to DirectSound:Speakers and that works.
But along came a new problem: When I plug my headphones in (which is often), Frodo does not change the audio to whatever Windows system is using as default. So I have to go into Audio output settings to switch between DirectSound:Speakers and DirectSound:Headphones.
Example: Set the Audio output Device to DirectSound:Speakers. Verify that it works without headphones. Plug in headphones. Audio is silent. Restart XBMC. Audio still silent. Observe using Windows (audio) Mixer (click on the speaker icon in the sytem tray) that XBMC is still sending output to Speakers, even though they are muted. Change Audio output Device to DirectSound:Headphones. Should now hear the audio. Verify using Mixer that XBMC is using Headphones.
Eden did not have this problem. There needs to be a SystemCurrent setting (and as system installation default) so that it will use whatever Windows is using at the time.
Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: This problem is probably related to those posted by Skypichat and Dmaker and others. Also I think the How-to suggesting I remove the Realtek HD Audio drivers is ridiculous. Realtek HD Audio is extremely common and XBMC should not require the dismantling of the system just to make XBMC work.
