I have a number of DVD images in .iso format hosted on an SMB server. I use XBMC 11.0 (listed as Git:Unknown Compiled:April 24 2012) installed from the Ubuntu repos, on Ubuntu 12.04 (X86_64). I created all of these .iso files in the same manner. I used the dvdbackup program (dvdbackup -i /dev/dvd -o ~ -M) to rip the entire disk to a directory. I then used mkisofs (mkisofs -dvd-video -udf -o ~/Movie_Name.iso ~/MOVIE_FOLDER) to create the .iso image.
XBMC will play many of these movies, but not all. I'm not sure all of the bad files fail in the same way, but my one example (Serenity.iso) seems to try to play, then XBMC displays an on-screen error "Playlist: Can't find next item to play".
I pasted a debug log at http://pastebin.com/AkgkGgT1
I found a user who seems to have the same problem, his blog post is at http://wmbuck.net/blog/?p=358
M XBMC installation is stock, other than these lines in my advancedsettings.xml:
