Help going from Windows 7 to XBMCbuntu

Hello and I hope this is the proper forum to use. It is dealing with 2 operating systems so didn't want to go Linux or Windows Specific.

1st, I am a linux newb. I am running an Unraid server, but that is the extent of my linux knowledge which is very limited. But, I like the stability, price and learning new stuff when I have the time. My Win 7 install has been acting up a bit, so I thought now is a good time to give Ubuntu a spin. Questions.

1. XBMCbuntu - Does it actually include the entire OS (installing to an HD not live CD)? Or is it simply an appliance style install? All I want is a browser like FF or Chrome for light browsing on the TV now and then. Can I get to a desktop with XMBCbuntu?

2. Is there a good write up on how to save my library? Can I simply export the library from Win 7 HTPC then import the same file into XMBCbuntu to avoid scraping all files and marking what has been watched?

3. Preferences and setup - I assume there is an XML file I can backup, but is this same file compatible if I change the OS?

4. Since I am green on Linux, would it be better for me to install ubuntu from within Windows and dual boot, then install XBMC? And if I do, can I simply pull the files needed for the library and prefs from the windows install files that already exist?

Thanks and I did do a few searches here on the forums and didn't find this topic. I also looked over the wiki (http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBMCbuntu) and couldn't really tell if it is a full ubuntu install or not. If this has been covered on the forums already and I missed it, please link me to the thread and I will take it from there.
