mp3 audio broken on Mavericks w/20131128 64-bit snapshot

Specifically this:

this is what I had before:

It's broken on older avi files with mp3 audio. Works fine with newer mp3 and mkv files.

And, it was working fine on the 20131101 snapshot.

OK, I went back to the original 20131101 and it still doesn't work. Ideas

Yes, default output device is selected (in the newest, optical selected in the 1101 snap).
