Don't know whether I'm missing something obvious here, but it's clear that "movie sets" are a complex issue to define currently. I know it's going to change in v13, but I think it could be really simple.
Could we not just have an option to "Define sets by folder structure", whereby if XBMC finds a folder with subfolders (and no movie file) it considers that folder a set, and uses the folder name as a title? That way it would also be possible to have nested sets should you wish if there are subfolders in the structure.

For example:
Code:
Resident Evil <- SET
- Resident Evil (2002) <- MOVIE FOLDER
- Resident Evil (2002).avi <- MOVIE FILE
- Resident Evil Apocalypse (2004) <- MOVIE FOLDER
- Resident Evil Apocalypse (2004).avi <- MOVIE FILE
- ...
- CGI <- SUBSET
- Resident Evil Degeneration (2008) <- MOVIE FOLDER
- Resident Evil Degeneration (2008).avi <- MOVIE FILE
