Mixing memory -- Bad idea for video playback?

I originally had 1GB 800MHz RAM in my desktop/media PC which is just about enough to run Windows 7 plus XBMC for 1080p video decoding. My videos are on SMB, and played fine in this configuration.

I got frustrated with the slowness in desktop mode though (particularly web use), so I decided to borrow some 633MHz RAM, two sticks, 1GB each. I installed them in the yellow slots, the existing memory (one stick) was in the red slot.

I then proceeded to play video, and it was extremely sluggish. Dropping more than half the frames. So I shut down the computer, removed the original 800MHz RAM (so I only had the 633), and booted it with 2GB. Videos played fine.

So, I'd like to get 3GB in this PC, but it seems to me as if that's not possible if the RAM speeds are mixed? Is this a potential issue with the GPU decoding? Perhaps it's not able to use DMA so effectively...?
