Volume increases in XBMC using Airplay - result is crackly audio

Regarding how I use my volume, I tend to keep the internal XBMC volume at around -20dBish and then my remote just controls the system volume overall (Windows 8 system). It appears that when I try to Airplay, that -20dB gets cranked up to the max (guessing it might be from my idevice being cranked?). Well, that results in some awful-sounding audio (extreme extreme crackling) on half or more of audio media.

Anyone else seeing this? Any workaround?
