Hi,
Just upgraded my htpc from Ubuntu Natty to 12.04LTS (Precise), and upgraded XBMC as well, from Eden to Frodo 12.1 (Git:0d373cc) via the team-xbmc launchpad repo. Everything is up to date as of time of posting.
h264 video playback now hammers the cpu to the point it's dropping frames. This is not what I was expecting to happen.
Hardware is an nvidia ION on a Zotac m/b with an Intel Atom cpu (i686).
Nvidia driver version 310.44 compiled against kernel 3.2.0-40.
xbmc.log is here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/5602998/
First I played a 720p xvid/avi of Frozen Planet (I know, right? no idea where that came from!) and that was OK - cpu use was around 15-20% or so, where I'd expect.
Then I played a selection of 720p h264/mkv files, all of which caused over 100% cpu load and dropped frames. (if you're grepping the log, "Arrow", "Copper" and "Hannibal" will find those)
VDPAU and VAAPI are currently both selected in settings, but the same behavior happens if I choose either one individually.
Previous tests have shown 1080p has the same problem also that container seems not to matter - mov, mp4, m4v all suffer the same issue. It appears to be h264 related. Although I don't have a lot of HD h263 or other formats to test with, so I can't be sure.
SD video plays back OK, but then it would do regardless of whether hardware decoding was working or not.
Any ideas?
I'm also seeing unexpectedly high cpu use when idle (properly idle, blank screensaver active, no image on TV, presumably no UI rendering) of around 20% where I'd previously have expected 5% or so. This is non-ideal but much less of an issue than suddenly not being able to play back HD video!
thanks in advance for your replies.
