Shared video library with standalone scanner

Hi,

I got an idea about setting up XBMC on my server, so it could scan for new contents 24/7 and then share the library to my HTPC via MySQL.

But what would be the best thing to do with the server?

Can I run XBMC as a daemon?
Are there any standalone "library scanners"?

Maybe someone has done this before?
