Hi,
I've been following this forum these late moths and the first thing I have to say is THANK YOU for being there, for your support and for all the work done through all these pages (not paid and working even on Sundays!). You're all superstars.
I've been thinking to build a storage server for myself and after reading quite a lot about it, I've come to the best solution for me in my modest and ignorant opinion:
* ZFS, RAID-Z1 (12 x 2TB HDDs, 3 volumes, 4 HDDs each)
* Ubuntu (or any other *NIX distro at least)
* Storage Server + Media Center (playing 1080p is the most complicated thing I will do with the machine)
* ECC memory (this is a must for my precious data)
I'm not looking to spend millions on this server but since my requirements include ZFS and ECC I know I'm not going to find a cheap solution either. I don't mind to pay a little bit more for good quality components that are going to last and are not going to give me headaches (I'm doing it for my peace of mind also).
Until now, the best combo I've found to start building my server would be something like this:
MoBo: SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O LGA 1155 Intel C204 Micro ATX Intel Xeon E3 Server Motherboard
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1220 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 80W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80623E31220
My main doubts, and that's why I came here to listen to what the masters of this universe have to say, are:
1) What do you think of building this kind of AllInOne solution? I also have an old desktop computer that could play as HTPC and build a pure file server separately for my media files. Do you see any better way to accomplish this? I'm still having a look at all different options available and any help/suggestion/advice will be more than welcome.
2) For that kind of build (more than 20TB storage + ZFS + Ubuntu + play HD movies): what would be the amount of RAM you'd recommend to use at least (ECC always)? Any specific brand, model, speed? Unbuffered, fully buffered?
3) To convert the machine in a good Media Center I suppose I'll have to find good graphic and sound cards. Any recommendation on these also?
Thanks so much in advance!
