Hi all. I'm not sure on the correct terminology for some of this so if I briefly explain what my query is then hopefully someone can point me at the (no doubt already existing) solution hopefully!
In a scenario where I have an xbmc instance running with NO local files stored on the same system but accessed via the network, how do I go about keeping things updated properly? To elaborate a bit: Think of an android tablet that accesses a small NAS box wirelessly. The content (movies and music) changes relatively frequently and neither the tablet nor the NAS box can be guaranteed to have internet access.
Further explanation: say I have a NAS box onto which I dump movies and music from my PC. I then load xbmc onto my tablet and fire it up the first time. At this point it has no music or movies available. I then "add source" for both and use SAMBA over the network to connect to my NAS "music" and "movies" folders. If I have an internet connection at this point, the xbmc installation can connect to the internet and scrape movie and music information and I get the full "xbmc experience" with fanart and info and so on. If I do NOT have the internet connection then I get a list of films and a list of music. If the music has been nicely tagged and has artwork included in the tag then presumably I'd see this artwork too?
What if the next day I delete a load of songs from the NAS box and a load of movies too. If I fire up the tablet again and try and access music and movies that it thinks exist, then it won't be able to play them. Fine for me, but confusing for my wife/kids who aren't technically literate. Do I have to do an "update library" each time I add or remove music and movies from the NAS box?
If I then plug a USB stick into the tablet with films/music on it, do I need to "scan" this in or can I set up another source called "usb stick" in file manager and then have it sitting permanently in the music and movies part of xbmc?
I'm just confused about how to get the best experience with all cover and fan art and movie information when I don't have an internet connection and how the xbmc instance handles new files appearing/disappearing.
