Adding sources

Hello all, i have been playing around with xbmc on my mac and have added my media sources from a qnap nas (volumes shows up when i add a new source and i just navigated to the films, tv shows folder etc) so i bit the bullet and brought a raspberry pi with the latest version installed, problem is i can't seem to add my media to the raspberry pi via afp which is how i connect to the qnap via the mac, when adding new source i enter afp, then ip 192.168.1.110 (qnap's ip) then volumes/Multimedia/Films which is the same path as what is listed in xbmc on my mac, have tried with password for the qnap and without
comes back with the following

unable to connect
Could not retrieve directory information.
This could be due to the network not being connected.
Would you like to add it anyway?

any help would be appreciated
