I am rebuilding my HTPC/Server. The HTPC side of this might be getting replaced by a Raspberry Pi (coming in the mail) just so I can control the server side without ever interrupting a video, but maybe not if I find the Pi too slow.
This server is responsible for downloading, file serving to a few computers, transcoding as many as 4 Plex streams (720P or higher) at the same time, maybe some light gaming (roms), and currently running XBMC for the HTPC part. It will be on 24/7. As I typed this I realize my two options may be a little overkill, but with the combo deal it is not much more than a Celeron G550 (my current CPU that struggles with the above) + adequate mobo while being 2-3x more powerful.
I am trying to decide between MicroCenter combo deals.
AMD FX 6300 + Biostar A880GZ AM3+= $140
Pros: More power than I will ever need. Many cores for transcoding?
Cons: Power hungry. Onboard video subpar (but good enough for HD video playback) potentially adding cost/power consumption if video card is needed.
i3-3225 + Biostar H77MU3 = $140
Pros: Efficient, slightly better mobo, still overkill in the power department, Intel HD 4000.
Cons: Not as powerful (but not really a con since this CPU is still more than I need).
Any help? Currently leaning i3.
