Out-of-order HD playback using XvBA on AMD E-450

It seems that since I'm using the Frodo series of XBMC (currently 12.0-RC2 Git:3231e30) on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, playback of Full-HD content is problematic. The problem is not easy to describe; a few times per second, a frame is displayed that was used 10-20 frames earlier. I'm not sure though if it is really the same frame, but it sure looks that way. The audio is in sync with the video and does not stutter. The 'flashbacks' occur irregularly but, as said before, 1-10 times per second.

The video driver is fglrx 9.0.2. The Linux kernel is 3.2.16 (custom built), but the problem remains when running a stock Ubuntu 3.2.0-35. The log doesn't contain much, if any, information that was produced during the playback. There is also nothing of interest in the Linux dmesg log.

Maybe also of interest:
- the mouse cursor is moving slugglshly during playback,
- playback of H264 content that is not Full-HD is flawless,
- Content is native 24 fps, and refresh rate is adjusted to that (although keeping it fixed doesn't change anything)
- The problem also occurred previously in XBMC 11.0 but could be 'fixed' by restarting the X session (and XBMC). What eventually triggered the problem is not clear. Sometimes hitting ESC during playback, causing the playback to continue in 60 fps would cause the problem that otherwise looked exactly the same as the issue I'm now permanently have.
- In about 1 out of 2 cases, exiting XBMC does not return to the desktop when Full-HD play was attempted. Requires restart of X session to recover.

Any ideas to fix this or figure out what the problem is ?

Thanks,

J.
