NFS -N Flag Problem

Wasn't sure if this was the correct place to post this, since it's not about actually running XBMC on the mac that is the problem. I have been attempting to set up NFS file sharing for Xbian running on a raspberry pi on my network. The media is stored on a harddrive connected to the mac and while Samba through SMBup did work, it played back with lots of pauses for buffering, and i read NFS would be much faster. The problem i have been having is that while the NFS shares are set up and visible on the Pi, they cannot be opened. I think this id because of the -N flag, which i have set inside the com.apple.nfsd.plist file, but it seems to make no difference. Does anyone know how to get the mac to recognise this change in the config file? I'm using Mac OS 10.8 and NFS manager to set up the shares if that helps.
