Library works but remote control doesn't

I seem to have the opposite problem of most people: when using the app I can use all library functions, such as 'Watch your movies' etc. but the section 'Use as Remote Control' doesn't work.

I've browsed a bit on the forum, and at first glance my configuration seems alright, but I have some doubts :-)

I've set up XMBC like this:

network / services:
ctonrol via http on
port 7777
username xxxx
password xxxx
allow programs on this system to control xbmc off
all other options off

I'm a bit in doubt about the entry 'allow programs' as I've seen it turned on in many examples. However, I'm also using an iPad using the official XBMC remote app, and in that one there is no need to turn it on, things work fine out of the box.

As for the 'allow programs' option, I've tried to turn it on, but then I'll get a 'Remote communication server' error, probably due to a port conflict with another application (SqueezeServer perhaps?).

I'm a bit puzzled here: would one remote app requite the option to be turned on, whilst another wouldn't care if it was on or off? Some help would be very welcome! Thanks in advance!
