New installation will not run

Hi from a brand new user (attempting to be, anyway. . .)

Installed ver 11 but it hangs while loading: I get the splash screen and then it hangs at a black screen with what appears to be a mouse pointer in the upper left corner -- at that point I must reboot.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times. no joy.

Running an Athlon 7850 on a Foxconn A78AX-S with 4GB
Video card is GE Force 8400GS /512MB (Driver Version: 6.14.11.8242)
Audio is on-board ATI/AMD SB600
Win XP SP3, 32 bit
