OpenELEC vs Ubuntu

I know there have been similar threads but I have'nt been able to find exactly what I've been looking for.

I'm about to begin building a HTPC and want it to run xbmc, however I'm not sure which OS to choose. I'm completely new to linux so if I choose it over windows it's gonna be a learning curve but this is really a project for me so I'm not too bothered. Basically I like the fact that OpenELEC and Ubuntu are free and open-source and are both pretty minimal compared to win7. From my HTPC I want to be able to watch all my tv shows and movies from my hdd which is taken for granted but I'm really interested in the addons like 1channel and the ones for watching live sport, and a web browser is a must aswell. I'm wondering are all of these compatabl with OpenELEC and if not I think they should all work fine with Ubuntu (like i said I'm a complete noob but I have spent hours researching and I'm a bit stumped in this area so any help would be greatly appreciated). Essentially I want to know if all of the addons will work on OpenELEC or Ubuntu (I've heard Netflix only works with windows which leads me to wonder will other streaming services work with linux).

And overall would you recommend OpenELEC over Ubuntu? How easy/difficult are they to set up? I'm only a young fella with a growing interest in computers so don't be too hard on me! And thanks in advance!
